A Word from the Chair

 

Dear Prospective Student:‌

The healthcare leaders of the 21st century will manage the most complex, integrated, and publicly accountable delivery systems in history. Successful leaders will assemble and guide teams that cross geographic, disciplinary, cultural, ‌and language boundaries.  They will operate in a highly competitive and constantly changing environment that demands the use of sophisticated business and political strategies as well as adherence to rigorous ethical principles. These are the leaders that we  train.

Our competency-based curriculum  includes the most recent additions to the health administration toolbox such as health informatics, health policy, and cultural competency while maintaining its roots in the theoretical foundations that have guided business leaders for decades. Our world-class faculty teach these skills within the rich context of contemporary health care challenges: rapidly changing technology, workforce shortages, reimbursement pressures, and increasing government scrutiny and regulation. We expose our students to health care professionals in the classroom, in off-campus projects, in our unique 12-month residency program, and through strong mentoring relationships.  Our curriculum is enriched by the support and participation of the more than 2,000 alumni of our programs.

Our faculty engage in cutting edge research that informs the most pressing issues in health care organization and delivery.  They complement scholarly activities in their own disciplines with collaborative multidisciplinary work across the MCV/VCU campuses. They participate in service activities and interact with Department alumni and other members of the state and national health care community.  They continually improve their teaching skills through continuing education in pedagogical techniques and technology.  Department staff and facilities support the learning environment with excellent administrative, fiscal, and student advising skills; and superior technology.  Together, the faculty and staff are committed to providing a supportive learning environment that fosters respect, encourages creativity, and promotes the success of all students.

Our students emerge from their time in the Department understanding that their mission of helping people maintain their health and dignity is of the highest order, and that their learning has just begun.  Curiosity, innovation, compassion, respect.  Excellence.  We invite you to join us.
