The 1st annual VCU Department of Health Administration Chili Cook-Off (Hosted by the MHA Class of 2018) will be taking place at the grant house on Wednesday November 16th, and will be raising funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation. We thought this would be a great opportunity for everyone to come together in the spirit of thanksgiving, and enjoy some good chili for a great cause.
Marilyn Tavenner (MHA ’89) joined a panel of VCU alumni on Friday, September 23rd at the VCU James Branch Cabell Library to reflect on their careers and to share the ways that their time at VCU influenced their lives and contributed to their success.
We are delighted to announce that Dr. Michael Rao, the President of VCU and the VCU Health System, will be a member of our outstanding faculty here in the Department of Health Administration. We cannot thank the VCU Board of Visitors enough for approving his appointment to our Department at their September meeting. Welcome Dr. Rao!
The ACHE 2015 Congress on Healthcare Leadership was held this week in Chicago, IL and the Department was well represented. Yvonne Nguyen, MHA Class of 2016, won 3rd place in the Richard J. Stull Essay Competition in Healthcare Management. She attended the conference to accept her award and presented her paper at a session at during the conference with the other graduate and undergraduate winners. David Zandona, who will be joining us in the fall as a first year Class of 2018 MHA student, won third place in the undergraduate essay competition. Last, but certainly not least, Professor Dolores Clement, Dr. P.H., FACHE won a Leader to Leader award for her work with the local ACHE chapter. A big congratulations to all of all of our award winners!
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator, Marilyn Tavenner (MHA '89), announced Friday that she's resigning from her position at the end of February. Ms. Tavenner, who's been with CMS since 2010, played a major role in the implementation of President Barack Obama's health-care law. Her agency wrote many of the new rules putting the Affordable Care Act in place and oversees the new health insurance exchanges created by the law. Ms. Tavenner, had been acting administrator of CMS since late 2011, and she was confirmed by the Senate in May 2013 — making her the first permanent head of the massive agency in about six years.
Dr. Gloria Bazzoli, along with Dr. Dave Harless from the School of Business, and Askar Chukmaitov (PhD ’05) from the Department of Healthcare Policy and Research, were awarded a large research grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (under the purview of the U.S. Department for Health and Human Services) to study the development and effectiveness of Accountable Care Organizations.
Dr. Jon DeShazo has received a Blick Scholars Award from VCU. These awards, made possible by a generous bequest from Lavinia Blick, are given only every four years to a maximum of ten junior faculty on the MCV campus.
Dr. Dolores Clement has been confirmed as the Sentara Professor of Health Administration. This professorship, endowed with a gift from Sentara Healthcare in 2007, is intended to support "distinguished faculty for the graduate training of men and women for eventual leadership roles” in healthcare.
