Positive Impact

Sep 26, 2017

The vision of the school’s Department of Patient Counseling is to fill the world with highly skilled spiritual caregivers. In early 2017, Valerie Mayo (Cert. ’17/PC) was one of those caregivers. She worked as a chaplain intern at VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital in the small town of South Hill, Virginia, where she just happens to have family.

Mayo worked in the acute and longterm care settings of the hospital as part of an interdisciplinary team, providing spiritual support to patients and their families. Joanne Bedford, M.Div./M.A.C.E, was Mayo’s supervisor and mentor. “It was an absolute pleasure,” she says, “to witness her pastoral presence in a community she is connected to in so many facets of her life.”
